Rod & Reel Combos
Zebco 202 Spincast Reel and Fishing Rod Combo
Rating

The Zebco 202 is the combo I recommend when someone is just getting started or wants to put a rod in a kid's hands. Spincast reels are easier to cast than spinning reels — you push a button, throw, and release. There is no bail to flip and a lot less frustration for someone who is still learning. My kids use it for bank fishing and it handles all the standard still water trout rigs without any issues. The rod comes pre-spooled with 10-pound monofilament line so you can be fishing within minutes of opening the box. One honest downside — spincast reels at this price point are not as refined as a quality spinning reel. It works well, but if you are an experienced angler you will probably notice the difference. For a beginner or a younger angler though, that tradeoff is absolutely worth it. Zebco has been making reliable entry-level gear for decades, and the 202 lives up to that reputation with 338 reviews at 4.5 stars and Amazon's Choice.
